The experience of “Kotronis Plastics”’, was the main title of the presentations given by our executives, Lazaros Sarotis, Quality Assurance Manager, and Evi Peleki, QC Raw Material Analyst, at the University of Patras, following an invitation by the Chemical Engineering Department.

Their presentations sparked an extremely interesting discussion with students, which focused mainly on the career prospects and challenges facing a Chemical Engineer, but also on the present and future of plastic food packaging.

At the same time, emphasis was also placed on more specific issues, such as the production and control stages at ‘Kotronis Plastics’, food quality and safety management standards, hygiene requirements in the whole range of processes and the contribution of plastic packaging in the food industry with emphasis on modern trends.

Accompanied by the President of the Department, Professor Dimitrios Vagenas, and Assistant Professor Ioannis Dimakopoulos, the students had the opportunity to come into close contact with their field of study and – with the help of our executives – to get acquainted with specific themes related to plastic food packaging production.

Establishing industry-academia links and interaction is firmly and consistently at the heart of our corporate culture, as we have long realised the mutual benefits arising for both sides.

Accompanied by Professor Georgios Kampouridis, the students learned about a number of management-related issues in detail, as well as the company’s organisational chart and noteworthy highlights of its profile and history.  The group was given a tour of the plant facilities, particularly the production areas and the machine shop.

The strong relationship that has developed with the TEI of Western Greece is a tangible indication of our company’s unwavering commitment to not only maintain but to further develop dialogue and cooperation with Greece’s universities and technological institutions.

Thirty six (36) students of the Goethe Institute coming from a total of 9 countries with their accompanying teachers while being in Nafpaktos as part of the educational program “Goethe acts green” , had the opportunity to get to know the way in which a plant operates with a total respect for the environment.

Both students and their chaperones were impressed by the way “Kotronis Plastics” works, and mainly by the fact that a plant produces its products with almost no environmental burden.

During the 10 days of their stay in Nafpaktia, pupils and teachers were accommodated in the “Petrina” guesthouse, where they enjoyed the unique natural environment of the area and developed activities of ecological interest.

Within the framework of the course “Topics of Industrial and Technological Applications of Materials”, students of the Department of Materials Science of the University of Patras were hosted in “Kotronis Plastics”, accompanied by the Lecturer, Mr. Dimitris Alexandropoulos.

The main purpose of the visit was to understand the way an industrial plant works. In addition to the general introduction to the production process, students were informed about the raw materials and their use.

More specifically, it was analyzed the way in which each raw material is selected, knowing the application in which it is going to be used. In parallel, it was presented a summary of the Company’s quality management systems.

The premises of the Company “Kotronis Plastics” visited students of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Patras, within the course “Industrial Automations”, accompanied by their Professor, Mr. Stamatis Manesis.

The students’ visit had a dual purpose. On one hand, to be introduced to the general framework of a mechanical engineer in the industry and, on the other, to deepen in a more specialized thematic related to the subject of the lessons taught by Mr. Manesis. More specifically, we gave students the opportunity to have a contact with a piece of hydraulic circuit design and then see in the production this piece operating.

In addition, it was analyzed a visual control system for products by camera and were examined the design and implementation steps of the project in concert with the students. Then, a tag feeder device plc code was examined, which then students saw it in mode in manufacture. Finally, they had a first acquaintance with a robotic arm (a 6-axial robot) once the Company’s staff introduced them to its mode of operation and programming.

The main axes of the “Kotronis Plastics” philosophy include the practical support of the interconnection of higher education with the labor market and in this case the industrial activity. As a result, the students of the University of Patras during their visit had the opportunity to come in direct contact with the subject of their studies and to obtain the necessary benefits from the knowledge and experience of the Company’s people.
